Base oil, the basic building block of lubricants, directly affects the performance, durability and suitability of lubricant products for their intended use. So what is base oil, which types are there and why is it so important? Here are the details:
Base oil is the main component that makes up 70% to 90% of lubricants. It is obtained by refining crude oil or by synthetic processes. Used on its own, it offers limited protection, but is combined with additives to make high-performance motor and industrial oils.
According to API (American Petroleum Institute) classification, base oils are divided into five main groups:
Group I :Solvent refined. Economical but low oxidation resistance.
Group II: Produced by hydroprocessing, more pure and stable.
Group III: Highly hydroprocessed, used in semi-synthetic oils.
Group IV: Based on synthetic polyalphaolefin (PAO). Offers high level performance.
Group V: Other special synthetic base oils (such as esters), usually used as additives.
The base oil determines the oil’s fluidity properties, temperature resistance, oxidation resistance and engine protection power. Use of poor quality base oil;
Wear on engine parts,
Inadequate oil film,
It can lead to serious problems such as oil degradation due to oxidation.
Therefore, the chemical purity, viscosity index and thermal stability of the base oil directly affect the quality of the final product.
The heart of lubricants is the base oil. Choosing the right base oil is critical not only for performance but also for the life of the engine and equipment. As FCİ Enerji, we offer reliable and efficient solutions to our customers with the high quality base oils we import.
